The Grand Lift of Rold serves as a critical gateway in Elden Ring, bridging the gap between the royal capital of Leyndell and the frozen reaches of the Mountaintops of the Giants. Traversing past this colossal structure is essential for players seeking to progress the main storyline and access late-game challenges. Understanding where to locate this lift and fulfilling its activation requirements allows Tarnished adventurers to seamlessly continue their journey through the Lands Between.
Locating the Grand Lift of Rold
To reach the Grand Lift of Rold, players must first navigate through the eastern sector of Leyndell, Royal Capital. Starting from the Avenue Balcony Site of Grace, head east along the main thoroughfare and open the heavy gateway. Follow the path upward through the outer outskirts and board the long elevator that leads down into the mist-covered Forbidden Lands.
After entering the Forbidden Lands, travel along the linear snowy corridor toward the east. Be prepared to encounter dangerous enemies, including a Night's Cavalry rider and the intimidating Black Blade Kindred guarding the final stretch. Beyond this boss arena lies the grand stone building housing the lift structure and its activation pedestal.
Unlocking the Standard Rold Medallion
Activating the Grand Lift of Rold for the primary story route requires acquiring the standard Rold Medallion. This key item cannot be obtained through exploration alone; it is awarded as part of the core narrative progression. Players must enter the heart of Leyndell and defeat Morgott, the Omen King at the Elden Throne.
Upon vanquishing Morgott, interact with Melina at the nearby Site of Grace to receive the Rold Medallion. With this medallion in your inventory, stand on the central platform of the lift and choose the prompt to hoist the medallion. This action triggers a cutscene and ascends the elevator directly into the Mountaintops of the Giants.
Accessing the Secret Haligtree Route
In addition to its main path, the Grand Lift of Rold conceals a secondary destination known as the Consecrated Snowfield. Unlocking this secret passage requires collecting both halves of the Haligtree Secret Medallion instead of the standard key. The right half is given by Albus in the Village of the Albinaurics, while the left half is found atop Castle Sol after defeating Commander Niall.
When standing on the lift platform with both secret halves, switch the action prompt using the directional controls to hoist the secret medallion. The elevator will descend into a hidden underground pathway leading to the blizzard-swept Consecrated Snowfield. Following this alternate route allows brave adventurers to seek out Miquella's Haligtree and confront Malenia.
